Benchmarking Scoring Averages and Sending Fall Coach Updates
October 13, 2026

Evaluate your competitive scoring against realistic D1 and D2 college benchmarks and send concise tournament schedule updates to target coaches this week.
College golf recruiting is grounded in quantifiable performance. While swing aesthetics and physical potential matter during in-person evaluation, college coaches first filter prospective recruits by verified tournament scoring, national rankings, and competitive scoring differentials.
Mid-October is a critical window to audit your tournament record, compare your performance against realistic collegiate division benchmarks, and send targeted schedule updates to programs where your game legitimately fits.
Aligning Your Tournament Record with Division Benchmarks
Many junior golfers build target lists based on school brand recognition rather than scoring data. To maximize your recruiting traction, evaluate your last 10 to 15 tournament rounds against standard collegiate scoring profiles.
Men's Division Benchmarks
- Top-Tier Division I (Top 50): Tournament scoring average below 72.5 on championship layouts (6,900 to 7,200+ yards), accompanied by national top-100 junior rankings and strong multi-day national tournament finishes.
- Mid-to-Low Division I: Scoring average between 72.5 and 75.0 on courses measuring 6,700 to 7,000 yards, with regular top-10 finishes on regional junior tours (such as TJGT or LJT) and national tier-two events.
- Competitive Division II: Scoring average between 74.0 and 77.0 on 6,600+ yard setups, demonstrating the ability to post under-par rounds alongside steady tournament top-five finishes.
Women's Division Benchmarks
- Top-Tier Division I (Top 50): Tournament scoring average under 73.5 on courses measuring 6,100 to 6,400+ yards, with proven national finishes.
- Mid-to-Low Division I: Scoring average between 74.0 and 78.0 on courses measuring 5,900 to 6,200 yards, with consistent high finishes in regional multi-day championships.
- Competitive Division II: Scoring average between 76.0 and 81.0, paired with solid ball-striking fundamentals and room for physical development.
Auditing Your Target List
Take an objective look at your competitive resume over the past six months. Look at your tournament differentials rather than home-course casual scores.
Divide your target list into three clear tiers:
- Reach Programs (20%): Programs where your scoring average is roughly 1 to 2 strokes higher than their current bottom traveling lineup, but your upward trajectory aligns with their historical recruiting profile.
- Core Fit Programs (60%): Programs where your current tournament scoring matches their roster's fourth and fifth player averages. You would compete for a traveling spot early in your college career.
- Safety Programs (20%): Programs where your scoring average is lower than their current team average. These schools offer roster security and immediate competition opportunities.
Reaching Out with Your Late-Fall Schedule
Coaches plan their fall scouting calendars weeks in advance. If you are competing in late-October events, send a concise, data-driven schedule update now. Coaches do not read multi-paragraph narratives; they look for basic metrics, upcoming dates, and a way to track live scoring.
Include the following items in your email:
- Full name, graduation year, hometown, and high school.
- Current GPA and verified test scores (if applicable).
- Recent tournament scoring average and your top three tournament finishes from the past six months.
- Direct link to your recruiting profile or swing video.
- Upcoming tournament schedule with exact dates and host venues.
If you are playing upcoming Texas events—such as the Lonestar Boys Invitational at Southern Oaks Golf Club (starts October 17), the TJGT Fall Series - Austin at Grey Rock Golf Club (October 24–25), or the North Texas Fall Classic at The Golf Club of Dallas (October 24–25)—give coaches sufficient lead time to add your tee times to their tracking sheet.
Action Step for This Week
Calculate your competitive scoring average across your last 10 multi-day tournament rounds. Select five schools that fit your current scoring range (core fit) and two where your game is trending (reach), then email each coaching staff your updated player resume and your confirmed tournament schedule for the remainder of October and November.
Track your own numbers
Log every round hole by hole, import verified tour scores automatically, and send coaches a stat page that stays current.
