The Texas junior golf tour ladder, explained

August 22, 2026

TJGT, Legends Junior Tour, NTPGA, STPGA, AJGA and Youth on Course all sit at different rungs. Here is how they stack up and where to start.

Start where you can compete, then climb

Texas has more junior golf on the calendar than almost any state, and that is the problem. New families sign up for whatever tour a teammate mentions and end up paying entry fees for the wrong level.

Think of it as a ladder.

Rung 1 — local and low cost

PGA section junior tours (NTPGA in the north, STPGA in the south) run one-day events at reasonable entry fees. This is where you build tournament reps: playing a full round with a card in your pocket, posting a real number, and learning pace of play.

A Youth on Course membership belongs here too. Rounds for a few dollars at participating courses is the cheapest way to add competitive-length practice rounds.

Rung 2 — multi-day state competition

The Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) and the Legends Junior Tour move you to 36- and 54-hole events against fields that travel. Two things change: you have to score twice in a row, and your results start becoming a résumé instead of a scorecard.

Rung 3 — national exposure

AJGA events are where college coaches build their watch lists. Performance-based entry means you earn your way in through the rungs below, not by writing a check.

How to use this

  • Pick one rung as your primary tour for the season instead of sampling four.
  • Add the next rung up only when you are consistently in the top third of your current level.
  • Log every round in one place so your scoring average is comparable across tours.

Deadlines are the quiet killer here. Most Texas tours close entries one to two weeks before the first tee time and fields fill earlier than that. Put every deadline on a calendar the day the schedule posts.

Track your own numbers

Log every round hole by hole, import verified tour scores automatically, and send coaches a stat page that stays current.
