The 18-Hole Short Game Combine to Drive Your Scrambling Stat
October 30, 2026

College coaches look at scrambling to see your true scoring floor. Use this scored 18-hole short game drill to measure and improve your up-and-down percentage.
Why Scrambling Dictates Your Scoring Floor
College coaches recruiting Texas junior golfers look at ball-striking metrics to assess ceiling, but they examine scrambling to evaluate floor. Even top-tier junior players hit only 11 to 13 greens in regulation (GIR) per tournament round on difficult setups.
When your ball-striking is off and you hit only 8 or 9 greens, your scrambling percentage—converting up-and-downs from off the green—determines whether you post a manageable 74 or shoot yourself out of contention with an 80.
To move this stat in tournament play, random chipping without consequences is insufficient. You need pressure, variable lies, and an objective scoring system.
The 18-Hole Short Game Combine
This combine simulates 18 distinct recovery situations around the practice green. You will play 18 separate "holes," rotating through three primary categories of shots.
The Setup: Three 6-Hole Stations
Set up 18 distinct starting points around the chipping green. Never drop two balls in the same spot.
- Station 1: Standard Greenside (Holes 1–6)
- Lies: Clean fairway or light fringe - Distance: 10 to 25 yards - Pin locations: Balanced mix of front, middle, and back pins with standard green to work with
- Station 2: Heavy Rough and Uneven Lies (Holes 7–12)
- Lies: Thick Bermuda or overseeded rough, sidehill or downhill stances - Distance: 15 to 35 yards - Pin locations: Short-sided pins, elevated landing zones, and downhill run-outs
- Station 3: Specialty and Bunker Shots (Holes 13–18)
- Lies: Greenside bunker (three standard, one buried or plugged) and tight-lie pitch shots (two) - Distance: 12 to 30 yards - Pin locations: Varied
Combine Rules and Scoring
Treat each of the 18 stations as a Par 2. Par for the combine is 36.
- Use one ball only. Hitting multiple balls eliminates pressure and distorts performance data.
- Go through your full routine. Read the green, pick a precise landing spot, execute your pre-shot routine, and finish the putt.
- Putt everything out. No concessions. If you miss a three-footer, you take the 3.
- Score the combine:
- Hole out in 1 shot: -1 (Score: 1) - Up and down in 2 shots: E (Score: 2) - 3 shots: +1 (Score: 3) - 4 or more shots: +2 or worse
Target Benchmarks
Use your total score against par (36) to benchmark where your short game stands:
- 32 or better (-4): Elite Division 1 level. Scrambling conversion rate is above 70%.
- 33 to 35 (-3 to -1): Competitive Division 1 / Strong Division 2 level. Scrambling conversion rate is between 55% and 65%.
- 36 to 38 (E to +2): Average high school tournament player. Scrambling conversion rate is roughly 40% to 50%.
- 39 or higher (+3 or worse): Short game is giving away 3 to 5 tournament strokes per round.
Connecting the Drill to Tournament Data
When you track your tournament stats, your scrambling percentage is calculated as:
$$\text{Scrambling \%} = \frac{\text{Total Up-and-Downs Made}}{\text{Total Greens in Regulation Missed}} \times 100$$
If you average 8 missed greens per round and scramble at 37.5% (3 of 8), you make 5 bogeys from missed greens alone. If you raise your scrambling conversion rate to 62.5% (5 of 8), you immediately remove 2 strokes from your scorecard on days when your swing is average.
Track your Combine score alongside your tournament scrambling stat over a four-week block. As your combine scores consistently dip below 36, you will see a direct drop in your tournament scoring average.
Action Step for This Week
Schedule two 45-minute practice blocks this week solely for this 18-hole combine. Record your total score against par (36) for both sessions in your practice log, noting which category (clean lies, rough/uneven, or bunkers) produced the most 3s. Focus your technical practice on that specific weakness before running the combine again.
Track your own numbers
Log every round hole by hole, import verified tour scores automatically, and send coaches a stat page that stays current.
